Rolleston is a small town 71 kilometers northwest of Springsure and 694 kilometers from Brisbane . It is located on the Comet River in central Queensland in Australia . The small town is at the intersection of the Carnarvon , Gregory and Dawson Highway . The place in the administrative unit Central Highlands Region had about 300 inhabitants in 2016.
history
Originally the Karinbal Aborigines lived in the area. Before European settlement began in 1860 there were 500 Aborigines, in 1879 only 200. The first encounters between the whites and the Aborigines were peaceful, but the displacement of the Aborigines by the European settlers led to violent clashes. In 1900, 100 Aborigines had survived around Rolleston. For their protection, the Barambah Aboriginal Reserve was established, which in 1924 contained only a few families.
The first European to set up camp in the Rolleston area was Ludwig Leichhardt . On his first expedition to Australia in 1844, he celebrated Christmas with steamed cockatoos and pudding on the shores of the Brown Lagoon . However, this celebration did not take place until December 25th because a violent storm raged on December 24th.
Leichhardt called the river that runs past Comet Creek (now Comet River ) because a comet appeared over Australia at that time. In 1862 a hotel for travelers was built at the ford of the Brown River . In 1865, construction began on Brown Town, which was later renamed after Christopher Rolleston , a senior British colonial official. In the early years of the city, the bushrangers Patrick (1863-1903) and James Kenniff (1869-1940) made the area of Rolleston unsafe.
Towards the end of the 19th century, the land around the small town was developed for agriculture. The church in the village was built in 1934. The local hardwood trees on the rest of the land could not be felled with conventional sawing tools and were not cleared by bulldozers until the late 1940s. In 1971 Rolleston was electrified. In 1991 a swimming pool and later a runway for planes as well as a sports field and tennis court were built.
economy
About 16 kilometers from Rolleston is the Rolleston coal mine. This open pit mine , which is located in the Bowen Basin , is operated by Xstrata Coal Queensland Pty Ltd , (stake: 75%), Sumisho Coal Australia Pty Ltd and IRCA Rolleston (stake: both 12.5% each). Coal mining began in September 2005 and it is believed that the deposit can be mined for 20 years. It is expected that 20 million tons of coal will be mined annually.
The place serves as a starting point for tourists to visit the Carnarvon National Park , in particular the Carnarvon Gorge.
