The city gained fame through the construction of the Zig Zag Railway around 1869, which had to overcome a height difference of 170 meters in a double hairpin . A museum railway is still in operation on this route today and runs daily.
Lithgow is the center of a coal mining area. There are still two coal-fired power plants in the immediate vicinity that supply Sydney with electricity. The first ironworks in Australia was also built here, the ruins of which can still be seen today in the Blast Furnace Park .
