Edward Bede Cardinal Clancy AC (born December 13, 1923 in Lithgow , New South Wales , † August 3, 2014 in Randwick ) was Archbishop of Sydney .

Life

Edward Clancy received a Catholic education and entered the age of 16 seminary of Springwood one. After theological and philosophical studies, he received the sacrament of ordination by Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilroy on July 23, 1949 and then worked for two years in the parish pastoral care . In 1951 his bishop sent him to Rome to the Pontificio Collegio S. Pietro Apostolo . He completed a degree in theology at the Angelicum and a degree in Holy Scripture at the Pontifical Biblical Institute .

From 1955 to 1958 Edward Bede Clancy served as a priest in two parishes in his home diocese before he was appointed Professor and Dean of the Department of Biblical Theology at St. Columba's College in Springwood in 1958 . In 1961 he began another doctoral program, at the end he became a doctor of theology doctorate was. He was then appointed Chaplain at the University of Sydney and Professor of Biblical Theology at St. Patrick's College, Manly .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on October 25, 1973 . the titular bishop of Árd Carna and Auxiliary Bishop in Sydney. Edward Clancy was the initiator of the canonization of Mary MacKillop , who was beatified in 1995 as the first and so far only personality of Australia and Oceania by Pope John Paul II and in 2010 by Pope Benedict XVI. was canonized .

Cardinal Clancy also had Saint Mary's Cathedral in Sydney , built in 1860, completed. He was the main initiator of the founding of the Australian Catholic University ; he was their first chancellor.

He died in August 2014 after a long illness in a Randwick nursing home where he had lived for eight years.
