Alexandre Cardinal do Nascimento (born March 1, 1925 in Malanje , Angola ) is retired Archbishop of Luanda .

Life

Alexandre do Nascimento attended the seminaries in Banglas , Malanje and Luanda , he was a seminarian at the Pontifical Portuguese College in Rome and in 1948 he moved to the Pontifical Gregorian University , where he obtained a degree in Catholic theology and on December 20, 1952 through Cardinal Luigi Traglia the sacrament of holy orders received.

In 1953 he returned to Angola and worked from 1953 as a professor of dogmatics at the seminary of Luanda, as editor of the local Catholic newspaper O Apostolado and co-responsible for Rádio Ecclesia . He was also a pastor for dock workers and wrote sermons for Luanda Cathedral . From 1961 to 1971 he worked as a priest in Lisbon , Portugal , where he also attended seminars at the law faculty. In 1971 he became General Secretary of the Caritas Association in Angola and President of the Church Court of Luanda. He also lectured moral theology at the local institute for social work.

On August 10, 1975, Pope Paul VI appointed him . to the Bishop of Malanje . The Apostolic Delegate for Angola, Archbishop Giovanni De Andrea , donated him episcopal ordination on August 31 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Luanda, Manuel Nunes Gabriel , and his coadjutor , Archbishop Eduardo André Muaca .

On February 3, 1977, Alexandre do Nascimento was appointed Archbishop of Lubango . During a pastoral visit, he was kidnapped by guerrilla troops in October 1982 and was not released until a month later.

Pope John Paul II accepted Alexandre do Nascimento on February 2, 1983 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of San Marco in Agro Laurentino in the college of cardinals .

On February 16, 1986, he was named Archbishop of Luanda . On February 8, 2001, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation.
