Damião António Franklin

Damião António Franklin (born August 6, 1950 in Cabinda , Angola , † April 28, 2014 in South Africa ) was Archbishop of Luanda .

Life

Damião Franklin studied philosophy and theology at the seminaries of Cabinda, Luanda and Huambo and received on 28 June 1978, the sacrament of Holy Orders . In 1976 he completed a dogmatics degree in Rome . In 1982 he received his doctorate in canon law from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome and taught at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. Damião Franklin was also a graduate of the International Institute for Human Rights in Strasbourg and an alumnus in Public International Law at the Academy of International Law in The Hague.

In October 1982 he became Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Luanda and a professor at the seminary . In 1984 he co-founded the Institute for Religious Studies (ICRA), of which he was Vice President from 1984 to 1993. He was also appointed professor of canon law at the Theological Faculty in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo. He has also been the founding rector of the UCAN Catholic University of Luanda since 1997 .

May 29, 1992 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To auxiliary bishop in Luanda and Titular Bishop of Falerone . The episcopal ordination took place on July 12th of the same year by Alexandre Cardinal do Nascimento . Co- consecrators were Eduardo André Muaca , Old Archbishop of Luanda, and Archbishop Félix del Blanco Prieto , Apostolic Delegate in Angola.

Damião António Franklin was appointed Archbishop of Luanda on January 23, 2001 by Pope John Paul II. From October 2003 to November 20, 2009 he was chairman of the Episcopal Conference of Angola and São Tomé ( Conferência Episcopal de Angola e São Tomé; CEAST ). On February 14, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI appointed him . as special secretary of the special assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa in October of the same year .

He died on April 28, 2014 as a result of an operation in a South African hospital.
