Eduardo André Muaca (born October 9, 1924 in Lucula, Angola , † January 26, 2002 ) was the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Luanda .

Life

Eduardo André Muaca was ordained a priest on January 18, 1953 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on March 4, 1970 titular bishop of Isola and auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Luanda . The Archbishop of Luanda, Manuel Nunes Gabriel , donated him episcopal ordination on May 31, 1970; Co- consecrators were Pompeu de Sá Leão y Seabra , Bishop of Malanje , and José Francisco Moreira dos Santos , Bishop of Carmona e São Salvador . The appointment was of considerable symbolic importance as it was the first time in colonial Angola that a Black Bishop became a member of the Catholic Church, which had close ties to the colonial power Portugal.

On September 25, 1973, he was appointed bishop of the Malanje diocese . On August 10, 1975 he was appointed titular archbishop of Tagarbala and coadjutor archbishop in Luanda. With the resignation of Manuel Nunes Gabriel on December 19 of the same year, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Luanda.

On August 31, 1985, Pope John Paul II accepted Eduardo André Muaca's resignation.

Remarks

  1. In the Methodist Church , which is widespread in Luanda and Malanje and remote from Portugal, there was already an important precedent.
