Giovanni De Andrea

Giovanni De Andrea (born April 22, 1928 in Rivarolo Canavese , Province of Turin , Italy ; † January 19, 2012 ) was a diplomat of the Holy See and a curial archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Giovanni De Andrea was ordained priest for the Diocese of Ivrea on June 29, 1951 . From 1956 to 1958 De Andrea graduated from the Pontifical Diplomatic Academy and then entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. Pope Paul VI bestowed on him on June 21, 1963 the honorary title of Surplus Chamberlain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and on April 13, 1973 the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness .

On April 14, 1975 Paul VI appointed him. the Titular Archbishop of Aquaviva and apostolic delegate in Angola . Cardinal Secretary of State Jean-Marie Cardinal Villot donated him episcopal ordination on May 11 of the same year ; Co-consecrators were the Archbishops of the Curia Giovanni Benelli and Bernardin Gantin .

On January 26, 1983 he was appointed Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Iran by Pope John Paul II and on November 22, 1986 as Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Algeria and Tunisia and Apostolic Delegate in Libya . On February 29, 1992, he was appointed Vice President of the Labor Office of the Apostolic See (ULSA). From 1993 to 2003 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Libreria Editrice Vaticana , the Vatican book publisher. Pope Benedict XVI accepted his age-related resignation . on October 13, 2007.

Until the restructuring of the Lieutenancy Italia Centrale e Sardegna of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem , the largest Lieutenancy of the Order in the world, he was its Grand Prior in 2010. His brother Giuseppe De Andrea was a canon of the Basilica of St. Peter and Apostolic Nuncio in Kuwait as well as Assessor of the Knights of the Tomb.
