Sir James Darcy Cardinal Freeman KBE (born November 19, 1907 in Annandale , New South Wales , Australia , † March 16, 1991 in St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney ) was Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney .

Life

Youth and priests

The tram driver's son Robert Freemans and wife Margaret Smith enjoyed the education of the Sisters of Charity at Elizabeth Bay and the Brothers of Christian Schools at St. Mary's Cathedral College, Sydney, where he was a good student of literature and music and sports enthusiastic. He attended St. Columba's Seminary, Springwood, and St Patrick's College, Manly. The Apostolic Delegate to Australia, Archbishop Bartolomeo Cattaneo , ordained him priestly for the Archdiocese of Sydney on July 13, 1930, with dispensation from the canonical age of 25 . He has served as vicar in Grafton, Murwillumbah, Strathfield, Mosman and at St Mary's Cathedral. He was then the Archbishop's private secretary and chaplain at St Patrick's College of Brothers of Christian Schools. He also served as parish administrator in Haymarket and pastor of Stanmore.

Bishop and Cardinal

Pope Pius XII appointed him on December 9, 1956 auxiliary bishop in Sydney and titular bishop of Hermopolis Parva . The Archbishop of Sydney, Norman Thomas Cardinal Gilroy , ordained him episcopal on January 24 of the next year at Saint Mary's Cathedral in Sydney ; Co- consecrators were John Thomas Toohey , Bishop of Maitland , and James Patrick Carroll , Auxiliary Bishop in Sydney. During his time as auxiliary bishop he took part in the first and last session of the Second Vatican Council .

On October 18, 1968 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Armidale . On July 9, 1971, he was appointed Archbishop of Sydney with the retirement of Norman Thomas Gilroys.

Pope Paul VI accepted him on March 5, 1973 as a cardinal priest with the titular church of Santa Maria Regina Pacis in Ostia mare in the college of cardinals . In 1977 he became Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire .

On February 12, 1983, John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. He then moved to St John, Vianney Villa, Randwick . He died on March 16, 1991 at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, and was buried in the crypt of Saint Mary's Cathedral.

Namesake

He is Patron of Freeman Catholic College in Bonnyrigg Heights , which opened in 1985 and has a student body of 1,220 students and a faculty of 114 teachers and staff. The Cardinal Freeman Center was founded in Granville in 1987 as part of the Vincentian Community . It provides shelter and support for homeless men in the greater area west of Sydney who are affected by drug and alcohol problems. The Cardinal Freeman Village in Ashfield is a retirement home with accommodation for 380 people.
