John Joseph William Molesworth Oxley (born January 1, 1785 in Kirkham Abbey , Yorkshire , † May 26, 1828 there ) was a British officer and one of the first Australian explorers. Its botanical author abbreviation is J.Oxley .

Life

Oxley entered the Navy and traveled with the ship Buffalo ( English Buffalo ) to Australia . For a short time he was assigned to Van Diemen's land, now known as Tasmania . After completing this assignment, he returned to England until he was appointed Surveyor General of New South Wales in 1812 . Five years later his career as an explorer began.

In 1817, together with the botanist Allan Cunningham, he successfully carried out the expeditions to the Lachlan River and Macquarie River . His discoveries were published as Journals of Two Expeditions into the Interior of New South Wales, undertaken by order of the British government in the years 1817–18 (German: Reports of two expeditions into the interior of New South Wales , undertaken by the British government in the years 1817–1818 ) published.

Oxley discovered Dubbo in 1818 . The diaries of his explorations report that he was in the Dubbo region on June 12, 1818. He wrote that he spent this day "in a beautiful country, thinly forested and apparently safe from the highest tides ...".

In 1819, Oxley sailed into Jervis Bay and found that this place was unsuitable for settlement. In 1823 he set out north along the coast in the cutter Mermaid to Port Curtis and Moreton Bay to explore these regions. He continued his discoveries in what is now known as South East Queensland .

In 1824 Oxley, accompanied by Cunningham, discovered the Brisbane River and Bremer River . He then recommended what is now Brisbane to the governor as the site for the Moreton Bay penal settlement, which has since developed into the city of Brisbane.

Oxley was a Freemason and a member of Lodge No. 227 .

The Oxley River and the Oxley Highway in New South Wales are named after John Oxley, as well as the Federal electorate of Oxley (German: Federal electorate of Oxley ) and the municipalities Oxley in Brisbane and Canberra . The Oxley Wild Rivers National Park is also a reminder of his voyages of discovery. The John Oxley Library (German: John Oxley Library ), part of the Queensland State Library , was created to make Queensland's documented history available and to preserve.
