Salima is a city in the central region of Malawi . It has 36,789 inhabitants (2018 census) and is the capital of the Salima district , which has an area of ​​2196 km² and 248,214 inhabitants (as of 2003).

Infrastructure

Salima is located on the Blantyre - Lilongwe railway line and on the Balaka - Chipoka - Lilongwe road , which is very well developed with German development aid, especially in the last-mentioned parts . The city is connected to the national power grid.

Salima has primary and secondary schools, a 1,500-meter-long airfield, a weekly market, a supermarket, a pharmacy and a bank. 80% of the district's population lives below the domestic poverty line. Problems of water supply in the city and the surrounding area due to insufficient well depth and wastewater disposal are unsolved. The FAO maintains the Lifidzi Goat Breeding Center for milk and meat production by goats .

The Lilongwe and Linthipe , two important rivers in the central region, come together directly in front of the city .

An important economic sector is tourism in the area of Senga with its more than ten kilometers of sandy beach, which is a very popular destination for weekend holidays for the people of Lilongwe. The 20 kilometer long road from Salima to Senga is a well-developed, paved road. There are several lodges with restaurants and overnight offers for upscale tourism, but also simple accommodations. Also important are the aquaristic companies that export numerous fish from Lake Malawi , most of which they are now breeding.
