The Northern Expressway is a motorway in the center of the Australian state of South Australia , north of Adelaide . It connects the Sturt Highway in Gawler with Port Wakefield Road in Waterloo Corner . The road has been upgraded to four lanes, enables a faster road connection from Adelaide to Gawler and relieves the Main North Road , which runs through the middle of the northern suburbs of Adelaide and has many traffic lights. It also serves freight traffic, which bypasses residential areas directly to Port Wakefield and on the Port River Expressway to Port Adelaide .

construction

The Northern Expressway was the largest road construction project in South Australia in the past 60 years and cost approximately AU $ 564 million, which was jointly funded by South Australia and the federal government. The planning and construction were carried out by the Fulton Hogan York Joint Venture and also included the expansion of an 8 km long section of Port Wakefield Road. Part of the cost was borne by the AusLink funding program.

Construction began in 2008 and the road opened to traffic on September 13, 2010.

The junctions and bridges along the highway are named after famous battles the Australian Army fought in, such as: B. Lon Tang, Kokoda, Tobruk and Kapyong .

Proposed Northern Connector

In early 2008, the government of South Australia presented plans for the Northern Connector , an eight-lane feeder from the Northern Expressway to the South Road . This would include the construction of an interchange with the Port River Expressway / South Road. The ARTC interstate railway line would also have to be rerouted, as it runs exactly on the route of the future feeder between Dry Creek and Taylors Road in Waterloo Corner .
