The South Road is an important main artery in Adelaide in the center of the Australian state of South Australia . Its southern extension is called Main South Road and connects Adelaide with the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula .

course

On South Road, most of the traffic flows from the southern suburbs of Adelaide to the city center. In Kuralta Park , this traffic is diverted to the city center by the Anzac Highway (A5).

From there, the South Road continues north as a western bypass of the city center and crosses many other major arteries such as Port Road , Regency Road and Grand Junction Road (A16) until it finally becomes the Port River Expressway (A9) and the Salisbury Highway (NA13) joins. Before the Port River Expressway opened in 2005, the section of the South Road and the Salisbury Highway between Grand Junction Road and Port Wakefield Road (NA1) , which was built in the 1990s, was called South Road Extension .

On the southern edge of town, in Clovely Park , from the intersection with Ayliffes Road and Shepherds Hill Road , the street is called Main South Road . This continues to the south-east, where the Southern Expressway (M2), a highway with changing direction of travel, branches off at Bedford Park and runs south parallel to the Main South Road. At Old Noarlunga the Southern Expressway meets the Main South Road again and 2 km further the Victor Harbor Road (A13) branches off to the south. The Main South Road continues as the state road B23 along the west coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula to the southwest and finally reaches Cape Jervis .

history

The road reached Old Reynella in 1964 and Old Noarlunga in 1972 .

Traffic congestion and expansion

The north end of the Southern Expressway connecting to Main South Road

Because of its importance to Adelaide traffic, South Road is often congested. With the development of the southern suburbs, traffic has also increased.

From 1982 to 1984 the road was overpassed over the Cross Road and the parallel railway line to remove a known bottleneck.

The (laboratory) state government had the Gallipoli underpass built under the Anzac Highway in 2009-2010 , as well as an overpass over the Adelaide – Glenelg tram line. The plans for underpasses under Grange Road , Port Road and the Outer Harbor – Grange railway line and the expansion of the particularly narrow section from Port Road to Torrens Road were postponed until the superway (see below ) was completed.

In November 2005, the Royal Automobile Association (RAA, Automobile Club in South Australia) passed their demands on the road network to the government of South Australia. The South Road was listed there as the worst developed road in the entire state with only 2 out of 10 possible points. The RAA called for investments of AU $ 6 billion for the entire road network, of which AU $ 1.5-2.0 billion only for the South Road. The RAA proposed a 6 km tunnel from Port Road to the underpass under the Anzac Highway, which would replace 6 major road junctions and 2 railroad crossings.

On August 18, 2007, Prime Minister John Howard announced that the South Road would be included in the AusLink national road network expansion program and promised an AU $ 1 billion contribution from the Australian federal government to the construction costs between 2007 and 2020.

In October 2009, the Prime Minister of South Australia and the Prime Minister of Australia jointly presented plans for the South Road Superway - a 3–4 km stretch of high-altitude urban motorway from the Port River Expressway to Regency Road, the AU $ 800 million. should cost. The project started in 2010 and is expected to be completed in 2014. The city freeway replaces the intersections with Great Junction Road, Cormack Road and the transition over the Adelaide – Dry Creek railway line. Unfortunately, this replaces a section of the route that is already relatively well developed with 3 lanes in each direction, while other sections of the route, e.g. B. that from Port Road to Regency Road, which would urgently need an expansion, remain unchanged.
