Raimundo Enes Meira

Raimundo Enes Meira (born May 25, 1866 in Afife , Portugal , † June 30, 1946 ibid) was a Portuguese officer, colonial administrator and politician. Meira is one of the main founders of the Partido Democrático in the Alto Minho , in the far northeast of Portugal.

Raimundo Enes Meira was the son of Joaquim Alves Meira and Custódia Enes Ramos Bezerra . In 1908 Meira married Laura Pinto de Lemos Pereira .

Life

As a volunteer, Meira joined the 3rd Infantry Regiment in 1886, later he became a cadet ( sargento graduado cadete ) in the 2nd Artillery Regiment . In 1893 he went to the artillery school and graduated as a lieutenant ( segundo-tenente ) in the same year . He then served in the 3rd and 5th artillery regiments. Meira became first lieutenant ( primeiro-tenente ) in 1895.

In May 1896 Meira was transferred to the Mountain Artillery Brigade in Portuguese India . José Norton de Matos and Alfredo de Sá Cardoso were also members of the expeditionary force during this period . Meira returned to Portugal in November 1897 and again served in the 3rd Artillery Regiment. In 1908 he was promoted to captain ( Capitão ). In 1911 Meira fought in the mountain artillery in the mountains near Gerez against the monarchist Paiva Couceiro on his first invasion of Portugal.

From June 2nd to June 19th, Meira was appointed civil governor of Coimbra to organize a general strike. On June 26, 1913, Meira took over the office of civil governor of Viana do Castelo . He held this post until March 21, 1914. For Viana, Meira was finally a member of the Partido Democrático in parliament in 1915.

After being promoted to major in 1916, Meira came to the 1st Panzer Battalion, which was sent to France during the First World War in 1917 , where it was integrated into the 2nd Division of the Corpo Expedicionário Português under General Simas Machado . Meira fought in the 6th and 11th artillery regiments. In February he was promoted to lieutenant colonel ( tenente-coronel ) and transferred to the general staff.

After the end of the war, Meira became vice-commander of the 6th Artillery Regiment ( Serra do Pilar ) and elected senator of the Partido Democrático for Viana do Castelo. Meira was re-elected in 1923 and 1925. Meira became a colonel and commander of the 6th Artillery Regiment in 1922.

From 1924 Meira was governor of the colony of Portuguese Timor , where he successfully reformed the finances and ensured a balanced budget. He introduced a property tax and a trade tax, opened an agricultural and industrial fair in Dili for the first time and awarded concessions to search for oil in the colony. In June 1926, Meira was recalled by the government of the National Revolution and transferred to the reserve in February 1927.
