The Bulbjerg is a limestone rock on the coast of Jammer Bay in the north of Jutland , Denmark . The rock protrudes clearly from the coastline and reaches a height of 47 meters.

geology

The layers at the bottom 15 meters are 65 million years old. They consist mainly of bryozoal limestone of the Lower Danium , which is covered by glacial moraine clay and layers of meltwater and finally by post-glacial drifting sand. According to the outdated geological periodization , the oldest layers of the Bulbjerg belonged to the Cretaceous system , while the Danium level is now assigned to the Paleogene system .

Until around 2000 years ago , the rock formed an island in the Littorina Sea , which at that time covered large parts of the Thy peninsula . At this time the steep cliffs to the north and west were created. The land area around Bulbjerg began to rise above sea level because the pressure of the ice armor decreased at the end of the Last Cold Age. To date, North Jutland is rising by an average of 2 mm per year (20 cm in 100 years). In addition, the ocean current caused material to land on the islands so that they were connected to form a coherent land mass.

Fossils (e.g. sea urchins and sea urchin spines) can be found at the foot of the rock .

Bird rocks

Bulbjerg is the only bird rock in Jutland. The kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla) breeds here in spring and early summer . In 2008 about 300 breeding pairs were counted; this bird species only breeds on Heligoland in Central Europe . In 2000, a brooding Fulmar -pair (Fulmarus glacialis) first successfully; since then there have been no further broods. You can also find eider , scoter and cormorant .

Skarreklit

The stump of the former “Skarreklit” rock needle juts out of the sea 130 meters from the beach line . In prehistoric times, the surf eroded the connection between this section of rock and the mainland. The free-standing rock needle finally reached a height of 16 meters until it fell victim to an autumn storm on the night of September 19, 1978. Today only a shallow stump remained.
