São João de Cabanas Monastery

history

Mamoas and other finds prove a prehistoric settlement. There are also finds from the Castro culture . Later Phoenicians and Celtiberians probably settled here. The current place goes back to the new settlement by the Count of Tui, Don Paio Vermudes, between 868 and 890 . After the conquest and partial destruction by Almansor at the end of the 10th century, the local monastery and its surrounding village were rebuilt in the 11th century, as confirmed in the royal surveys of 1258 . Afife has belonged to the county of Viana do Castelo since the 16th century.
