Vila Franca is a municipality ( freguesia ) in the northern Portuguese district of Viana do Castelo in the Minho-Lima sub-region . 1757 inhabitants live in it (as of June 30, 2011).

history

A fortified settlement of the Castro culture existed here when the Romans settled from the 2nd century BC. BC settled here. The name has not been passed down, but it was known as Ceguelos when a church in honor of the Archangel Michael ( Portuguese: São Miguel) was built here in the 12th century AD . In the further course of the 12th century the place known from then on as Villa Franca was created . In the royal surveys of 1220, 1258 and 1290 it was listed as the seat of the municipality of São Miguel de Figueiredo . In 1528 the names Vila Franca and São Miguel de Figueiredo were already used synonymously before the municipality was later referred to as Vila Franca .
