William F. Marcuson III

William F. Marcuson III (* 1941 in North Carolina ) is an American civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering ).

Marcuson studied civil engineering at Citadel Military College (1963) and Michigan State University (1964). In 1970 he received his PhD in geotechnical engineering from North Carolina State University and was then at the Waterways Experimental Station (WSE) of the United States Army Corps of Engineers in Vicksburg , Mississippi . From 1981 until his retirement in 2000 he was director of the geotechnical laboratory there. He has his own engineering office, WFMarcuson III and Associates.

He dealt in particular with earthquake-proof construction of dams and the analysis of the behavior of dams in the event of earthquakes as well as liquefaction .

In 1999 he was a Terzaghi Lecturer . He was president and honorary member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).
