Thomas B. "Tom" Barlow (born July 9, 1896 in Trenton , New Jersey , † September 26, 1983 in Lakehurst , Arizona ) was an American basketball player and one of the first athletes who played the sport professionally. Barlow played for at least twelve different professional teams, often two or three at the same time. Barlow is considered one of the most dominant player personalities of his time and was an early star of the sport in his active years between 1912 and 1932. For his career achievement, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1981.
Career
The most important stations in Thomas Barlow's career were the Trenton Tigers as well as the Philadelphia SPHAs and the Philadelphia Warriors of the American Basketball League , the first professional league known by this name between 1925 and 1955. As a player of the latter two teams, Barlow was coached by Edward Gottlieb , who later also to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
The year 1926 marked the peak of Barlow's career. As their dominant player, he defeated the then exceptional team of the Original Celtics with the SPHAs in two of three clashes. In the same year two wins (from two games) against the no less strong team of the New York Renaissance .
Thomas Barlow was a player in the first basketball game to be played in the world-famous old Madison Square Garden .
