history

Before the settlement by European immigrants, a small number of Aborigines lived in the area. They met regularly to trade goods and participate in complex social rites. It is believed that Nuriootpa was one of the great meeting places in South Australia.

The first European explorers came through the Barossa Valley in 1838. Colonel William Light , the Surveyor-General of South Australia, sold the area around what is now Nuriootpa to the entrepreneur George Fife Angas . In the period that followed, the area was briefly known as Angas Park. After the discovery of a copper deposit near Kapunda , the town became an important stopping point for miners and drivers of ox teams. To meet the growing demand for accommodation, William Coulthard built the Red Lion Hotel. The city that was officially founded in 1854 grew around this hotel.
