The Orange Star of Bethlehem ( Ornithogalum dubium Houtt. , Syn .: Eliokarmos dubius . (Houtt) Mart.-Azorín, MBCrespo & Juan ) is a plant from the family of asparagus plants (Asparagaceae).
description
The orange milk star is a perennial , herbaceous bulb plant that usually reaches heights of 15 to 30 centimeters. The 3 to 8 leaves measure approximately 10 × 2 centimeters and are ciliate on the edge. The flower is orange, very rarely white, and has a diameter of 20 to 25 millimeters. More than 20 flowers are arranged in a dense, cylindrical cluster. The styluses are very short.
The flowering period extends from July to September at the natural site.
Occurrence
The orange milk star occurs in South Africa in the Cape Province .
use
The orange milk star is rarely used as an ornamental plant for summer borders and often as a pot plant. As a pot plant, the species blooms from April to June. As a cut flower , it lasts for several weeks and is therefore called "gardener's death". The plant is not hardy . The bulbs of outdoor plants should be dug up in autumn and stored protected from frost over the winter.
