The Mary River is a river in the Australian state of Northern Territory .

Its catchment area is bounded in the west by the catchment area of the Adelaide River , in the east by that of the Wildman River . Near the mouth it splits into several arms, of which Tommycut Creek and Sampan Creek are the most important.

environment

Since the 1940s, the 1,300 km² wetlands near the estuary have been subject to increasing salinization, which has been countered by the authorities since 1987 with considerable effort. The reasons for the salinization are not exactly known; feral water buffalo , among other things, are considered as possible causes , but also blasting, which served to widen the waters. In the coming decades, rising sea levels will increase salt input even more. It is estimated that without countermeasures, the wetlands would be completely flooded by seawater by 2050.

climate

The nearest weather station is Middle Point Rangers (Lage), about 38 km to the west . Temperatures there reach their maximum in October to December with average maximums of 35.6 ° C and 33.8 ° C and average minimums of 22.7 ° C and 23.9 ° C. In July, the coldest month, mean maxima of 31.3 ° C and mean minima of 14.9 ° C are reached (1965–1998). The average annual rainfall has been 1411 mm (since 1957), with strong differences occurring over the course of the year: In the rainiest month, January, there is 332.6 mm, in the driest month, July, only 0.9 mm.

fauna

In the wetlands near the mouth, which the Mary River crosses on its last 25 km, 54 species of fish were detected in the late 1990s. At the beginning of the rainy season, the waters are predominantly populated by marine fish such as barramundi , dot-stripe argus fish and mullets . After the onset of rainfall and the rise in water levels, it is possible for the freshwater fish living upstream (e.g. Ambassis agrammus , Melanotaenia splendida inornata and blue eyes ) to migrate downstream, so that a mixed population emerges there during the rainy season.

economy

tourism

The Mary River is crossed by the Arnhem Highway , which connects Darwin , the capital of the Northern Territory, with the major tourist attraction, Kakadu National Park . A large part of the river is part of the Mary River National Park , founded in 2007, which aims to make the hitherto little developed area more attractive to tourists.

Agriculture

The pasture industry, for which more than 60% of the catchment area is used, achieves an annual turnover of about 17.5 million dollars with a production of about 35,000 head of cattle.
