Batchelor is a settlement on the edge of Litchfield National Park in the Northern Territory in Australia . Batchelor had a population of 466 in 2016. The place was named after the Australian politician Lee Batchelor .

history

Batchelor was expanded in the postwar period, as in the 8 km northern and the company Rio Tinto Group operated Rum Jungle mine uranium was mined. In the early 1970s, after the mine was closed and Litchfield National Park was established, the town's existence was given a new footing.

climate

Batchelor usually has consistently high temperatures, with October being the hottest month with a mean maximum of 37.0 ° C. The coldest months are June and July with a mean maximum of 31.4 ° C (June) and a mean minimum of 15.9 ° C (July), respectively. The lowest temperature ever recorded of 6.9 ° C was recorded on June 19, 2004. An average of 1479 mm of precipitation falls per year, although there are considerable seasonal differences: the average amount of precipitation in July is 0.0 mm and the maximum is 0.2 mm. In February, the rainiest month, there is an average of 364 mm of precipitation. It should be noted that the measurements did not begin until 1992 (temperatures) and 1994 (precipitation).

traffic

Batchelor is about 9 km (as the crow flies) west of the Stuart Highway that connects Darwin with Adelaide . Long-distance buses to Darwin, about 100 km away, to Adelaide and Perth stop at the junction. The driving time to Darwin is about 1.5 hours, to Alice Springs about 20 hours.

Although the rail link between Darwin and Alice Springs is only a few miles from Batchelor, no train stops there.

Coomalie Creek Airfield, dating from World War II, is located on the Stuart Highway.
