Bernie Senensky

Bernard "Bernie" Senensky (born December 31, 1944 in Winnipeg , Manitoba ) is a Canadian jazz pianist and composer . After Allmusic is considered one of the best jazz musicians in Canada.

Live and act

Senensky began taking piano lessons at the age of eight; At the age of 14 he discovered jazz and was taught by Bob Erlendson . Soon he began getting into local groups; Lenny Breau's band with Dave Young was one of them . In 1968 he moved to Toronto, where he accompanied traveling musicians such as Chet Baker , Dizzy Gillespie , Slide Hampton , Zoot Sims , Sonny Stitt , Clark Terry , Kenny Wheeler , Joe Williams and Phil Woods . He belonged to the groups of Fred Stone , Peter Appleyard , Ed Bickert , Herbie Spanier , Andrew Scott and Rob McConnell's Boss Brass . He also recorded with Pepper Adams ( Live in Toronto 1977 ), Tisziji Munoz, Bill McBirnie and Stefan Bauer ( Coast to Coast ).

In the early 1970s he founded his own trio, initially with Marty Morell and Michel Donato , with whom he has recorded several albums. Since 1979 he has been part of Moe Koffman's quintet for 20 years , for whom he also composed. He keeps the memory of Koffman's work alive with his Tribute to Moe Koffman Band . He was on the faculty at Humber College.

Prizes and awards

His album Friday the 14th was nominated for a Juno Award for best jazz album of the year in 1989, as was Wheel Within a Wheel in 1993 . He was twice named Best Acoustic Pianist in the Jazz Reports Awards ; for his Blues for Clifford he received a SOCAN Award.
