Bill McBirnie (2012)

Bill McBirnie (born May 23, 1953 in Port Colborne ) is a Canadian jazz flutist ; he plays the entire family of flutes , from the piccolo to the bass flute .

Live and act

McBirnie grew up in his hometown, a small town in Ontario . He studied in Toronto with Samuel Baron and Robert Aitken , but also with Richard Egues. His long and careful study of both jazz and classical flute techniques has resulted in his being known among experts for his excellent technique. His breakthrough began in the early 1990s.

McBirnie has appeared on recordings by Junior Mance , Irakere , Memo Acevedo, Four80East, Emilie-Claire Barlow, Diana Panton, Fern Lindzon and Eleanor Mccain; he is also a founding member of Bernie Senensky's Moe Koffman Tribute Band . Under his own name, he has released several albums, most of which have received excellent reviews. He writes for a long time for the column Woodwinds of the magazine Canadian Musician.

McBirnie has received numerous prizes and awards in both Canada and the USA, including "Flutist of the Year" (Jazz Report Awards), winner in all three competitions of the National Flute Association in the USA for jazz flute (soloist, master class and big band), "Best Jazz Album" (Toronto Independent Music Awards) and nomination for "Best Jazz Album" (Independent Music Awards in the USA). James Galway has asked him to be the jazz flute specialist on Galway's official website.
