Marty Morell

Martin Matthew "Marty" Morell (born February 25, 1944 in New York City ) is an American modern jazz musician ( drums , percussion , vibraphone ), who is best known as a member of Bill Evans' trio and for a long time played primarily in musicals .

Live and act

Morell learned the piano and clarinet as a child and switched to drums at the age of twelve. He graduated from the Manhattan School of Music and then studied vibraphone with Morris Goldenberg and timpani with Saul Goodman at the Juilliard School . Then he worked with the quintet by Al Cohn / Zoot Sims , Steve Kuhn and Gábor Szabó ; he also recorded with Pee Wee Russell / Red Allen and Gary McFarland . In 1968 he became the drummer in Bill Evans' trio, which also included bassist Eddie Gomez . Until 1974 he stayed in this combo, with which he went on tour and recorded several albums, such as You're Gonna Hear from Me (1969). He can also be heard on the recording Live at Art D'Lugoff's Top of the Gate .

He then moved to Toronto , where he worked primarily as a studio musician. He also led his own bands and played congas in the funk jazz group Ravin ' . He also worked with Don Sebesky , Stan Getz , Kenny Wheeler , Claus Ogerman , Sammy Nestico , the Singers Unlimited , Bernie Senensky and with the Big Band of Rob McConnell .

Morell has also worked in the classical music field with the Toronto Symphony , the Canadian Opera Company , the Hamilton Philharmonic , the Canadian Brass, and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet . From 1989 on, he was a percussionist in the musical performances of Phantom of the Opera in Toronto. In 1998 he moved back to New York City, where he was one of the musicians of the musical Ragtime and, after the performances on Broadway, also accompanied the tour. Then he was at the performance of the musicals Kiss Me, Kate and Seussical - The Musical! involved.

In 2006 he recorded his first album under his own name with a quintet in Toronto. In the same year he began working with the Duke Ellington Orchestra , with whom he was in Japan in 2008. With the pianist Takana Miyamoto he appeared several times in a Bill Evans program.

In 1986/87 he headed the Percussion Department at Mohawk College in Hamilton (Ontario) . Since 2007 he has been a drum professor at the University of Central Florida .
