Elisaveta Bagriana (also Elisaveta ; Bulgarian Елисавета Багряна * 29. April 1893 in Sofia , Bulgaria , as Elizaveta Ljubomirowa Beltschewa , Bulgarian Елисавета Любомирова Белчева ; † 24. March 1991 ibid) was a Bulgarian poet , the musical and among other children's poems wrote. She is considered the first Bulgarian poet to speak openly about her deepest feelings as a woman in her works.

Bagrjana studied Slavic Philology at St. Kliment Ohridski University in Sofia . After her first poems had been published in 1915 and she had worked as a teacher for several years, she devoted herself entirely to writing and worked for various magazines and newspapers.

Her first book, published in 1927, cemented her reputation as an important poet. Her main works include The Year Rolls Off (1930) and Des Seemanns Stern (1932). Together with Nikola Furnadschiew and Mladen Issajew , Bagrjana wrote the text for the Bulgarian national anthem, which was valid from 1950 to 1964 .

Her style hovers between traditional song form and modern literary instruments; her poems have been translated into more than 30 languages ​​and published in numerous countries.

Bagrjana was good friends with the family of the future Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff .

In 1992 the asteroid (4400) Bagryana was named after her. The same has been true for Bagryana Point , a headland on Greenwich Island in Antarctica , since 2017 .
