Linda Catlin Smith

Linda Catlin Smith (* 1957 in New York City ) is a Canadian composer of American origin.

Smith studied composition and music theory with Allan Shawn in her hometown , continued her education at the University of Victoria with Rudolf Komorous , Martin Bartlett , Michael Longton and Jō Kondō and attended courses with Morton Feldman in Buffalo. She also studied piano with Nurit Tilles and Gilbert Kalish at Stony Brook University and with Kathleen Solose and harpsichord with Erich Schwandt .

Many of her works were commissioned by the Canada Council for the Arts , the Ontario Arts Council , the Toronto Arts Council and the Laidlaw Foundation, among others . They have been performed by musicians and ensembles such as Eve Egoyan , Anthony de Mare , Colin Tilney , Elinor Frey , Philip Thomas , Colin Tilney, Vivienne Spiteri , Jamie Parker , Vancouver New Music , the CBC Vancouver Orchestra , the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony , and Penderecki Quartet and the Modern Quartet and recorded by Arraymusic , Barbara Pritchard and Les Coucous Bénévoles , among others .

She received two one-year grants from the Canada Council for the Arts and the 1997 Hunter Foundation Award . From 1988 to 1993 she was artistic director of the Arraymusic ensemble . From 1992 to 2006 she was a member of the URGE performance collective . For a performance at the Tapestry New Opera in 2003 she composed the opera Facing South based on a libretto by Don Hannah . In 2005 she received the Jules Léger Prize for the composition Garland. In addition to her work as a composer, she gives composition lessons privately and at the Wilfrid Laurier University .
