Gilbert Kalish

Gilbert Kalish (born July 2, 1935 in New York City ) is an American pianist and music teacher.

Life

Kalish studied at Columbia University until 1956 and completed his training at the Berkshire Music Center and the Marlboro Festival . His teachers included Leonard Shure , Julius Hereford and Isabelle Vengerova . In 1962 he was a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble , of which he was a member until 1979, and from 1969 to 1998 pianist with the Boston Symphony Chamber Players . He has also worked with ensembles such as the Gramercy Chamber Ensemble , the Aeolian Chamber Players and the Penn Contemporary Players and with soloists such as the singers Jan DeGaetani and Dawn Upshow and the cellists Timothy Eddy and Joel Krosnick . As a guest he appeared u. a. with the Boston Symphony Orchestra , the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and many well-known string quartets such as the Concord Quartet , the Emerson Quartet , the Fine Arts Quartet , the Juilliard String Quartet , the New World String Quartet and the Orion String Quartet on .

As a soloist, Kalish took part in international festivals and performed in major concert halls around the world. His repertoire also includes works by 20th century composers such as Alban Berg , Luciano Berio , Elliott Carter , Olivier Messiaen and Igor Stravinsky . On more than a hundred recordings he has played classical works such as Joseph Haydn's piano sonatas as well as 20th century masterpieces such as Charles Ives ' Concord Sonata and compositions by George Crumb , Ralph Shapey and Arnold Schoenberg .

From 1966 to 1969 Kalish taught at Rutgers University , from 1968 to 1997 at Tanglewood Music Center (from 1985 in the function of Chairman of the Faculty ). Since 1970 he has been Professor of Piano at Stony Brook University . In 1995 he was awarded the Paul Fromm Awrad by the University of Chicago for his services to contemporary music .
