Isabelle Vengerova

Isabelle Vengerova (Russian Изабелла Афанасьевна Венгерова;. * February 17 . Jul / 1. March  1877 greg. In Minsk ; † 7. February 1956 in New York ) was a Russian-Jewish pianist and music teacher .

Life

Isabelle Vengerova is the daughter of the author Pauline Wengeroff . She studied piano at the Conservatory of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Vienna with Josef Dachs and privately with Theodor Leschetizky , then in Saint Petersburg with Anna Nikolajewna Jessipowa .

From 1906 to 1920 she taught at the St. Petersburg Conservatory , from 1920 to 1923 she went on concert tours through the USSR and Western Europe , after which she settled in the USA .

In 1924 she co-founded the Curtis Institute , where she taught piano, and from 1933 also at Mannes College .

Her students included u. a. Ralph Berkowitz , Samuel Barber , Leonard Bernstein , Lukas Foss , Anthony di Bonaventura , Gary Graffman , Lilian Kallir , Virginia Reinecke , Joseph Rezits , Abbey Simon , Gilbert Kalish , Jacob Latin and Leonard Pennario .

She was the aunt and first teacher of Nicolas Slonimsky .
