The Gießener Allgemeine Zeitung ( Gießener Freie Presse until 1966 ) is a regional daily newspaper for the city and district of Gießen, which appears Monday to Saturday . history
On January 2, 1946, the military government issued license No. 26 W to publish the Giessen Free Press . The first edition appeared on January 8, 1946. The first editors were Adolf Weller and Julius Hahn, who switched to Adolf Weller and Hans Rempel on June 3, 1948.
Hans Rempel's leading article "Mitbestigung" (Mitbestigung) on July 24, 1948 led to a heated controversy with the union, to the dismissal of an editorial board member and finally to the first strike in the Federal Republic of Germany.
In 2017, Gießener Allgemeine revised its entire online presence using the Ippen Group's editorial system, with which its Munich central editorial office can post articles independently of the Giessen editorial team.
