The Honsell Bridge is a two-lane road bridge with pedestrian and cycle paths on both sides over the entrance to the Osthafen am Main in Frankfurt . It was built in the course of the port construction from 1908 and was inaugurated in 1912. From the bridge you have an excellent view of the Frankfurt skyline and the building of the former wholesale market hall . The bridge is named after the hydraulic engineer Max Honsell . Between September 2011 and the end of 2013 the bridge was completely renovated and reinforced according to plans by the Frankfurt architect Ferdinand Heide and the engineering office Grontmij (since 2016 Sweco ).

The architecturally valuable bridge, designed with Art Nouveau elements, consists of a number of structurally different segments. The main part of the bridge is a two-hinged steel truss - arch bridge with an elegant crescent arch girder, which has a span of 90 m.

To the north of it there was a foreland bridge more than 260 m long, a brick arched viaduct with six segments, modeled after that of the Berlin Stadtbahn . The formerly open basket arches were closed in 1913 in order to accommodate workshop and lounge rooms.

The bridge's railings and lamps are lavishly decorated. Reliefs indicate the work in the harbor and the ramp at Hanauer Landstrasse was guarded by a stone sculpture of a panther.

The Honsell Bridge is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act and part of the Route of Industrial Culture Rhine-Main .

Traffic function

On the Honsellbrücke, the Honsellstrasse crosses the entrance to the east port and the municipal connecting railway . It was used by the number 31 of the Frankfurt city traffic until the renovation began .

The intention was to continue the traffic axis through another bridge that would cross the Main and lead to Sachsenhausen during the construction period . But this did not happen because of the First World War . The Osthafenbrücke has now been built and installed since 2011, thereby realizing this concept.

Development and construction

Due to a revitalization of the Frankfurt Ostend and the crossing of the Main at this point that began in summer 2011 ( Osthafenbrücke , previous project name Mainbrücke Ost ), the bridge had again been upgraded in terms of traffic. The bridge had to be reinforced because of the insufficient load (20 t). For this purpose, the inventory received in 2006 was documented in advance. The current appearance of the Honsell Bridge has largely been secured by preserving the steel arches, hangers and railings. The deck was completely renewed. Since then, it has been a steel composite deck, suspended with steel cables from the two new bridge arches that were built over the old arches. The old bows and hangers only bear their own weight. The “grafting” of the new arches and hangers onto the existing ones is an attempt to minimize interventions in the shape of the bridge.

The access to the bridge has also been adapted: between Hanauer Landstrasse and Eyssenstrasse, Honsellstrasse has been significantly widened to create space for greenery as well as cycle and walkways. In future, Honsellstrasse will no longer cross Eyssenstrasse, but will cross at the same height, so that a new connection has been created here. Two of the original six arches of the viaduct have been preserved under monument preservation supervision. The natural stone reliefs, which are valuable in terms of monument preservation, and the historical lights were reused in the new building. The two arches that remained in the course of the renovation are to be used for gastronomic and cultural purposes in the future.

The construction work was awarded in July 2011. The total amount awarded for the entire Honsellstrasse including bridges is around € 14 million gross. In addition, there are costs for planning and experts. Construction began in September 2011.

The bridge, together with the Osthafenbrücke, was opened to traffic on December 10, 2013 by the Lord Mayors Peter Feldmann and Horst Schneider , as well as the Head of Transport, Stefan Majer.
