Georg Herold (born July 26, 1947 in Jena ) is a German sculptor .

Life

After training as a blacksmith in the GDR, Georg Herold studied with Sigmar Polke at the Hamburg University of Fine Arts from 1977 to 1983 . During the early 1980s, together with Albert and Markus Oehlen , Werner Büttner and Martin Kippenberger, he questioned the current boom in the art market. Herold soon said goodbye to this phase as a young savage and developed a very personal and thoughtful work. In his often ironic-critical work, he uses simple materials such as roof battens, bricks and other everyday objects. With his works he questions traditional forms of expression in mural and sculpture in multiple (minimalist) ways - with his titles he likes to humorously question the perception of the viewer and the material he uses. For several years he has been working intensively on the work of Albrecht Dürer , which had a great influence on Herold's work.

Herold's oeuvre includes not only sculptures but also installations and video works.

Georg Herold is a professor of sculpture at the Düsseldorf Art Academy .

Herold lives and works in Cologne.
