On the horizon after the end of the row of houses in Malo-les-Bains, the large double building of the FRAC is the first building in the skyline of the port of Dunkirk.

The FRAC Nord-Pas de Calais in Dunkirk is one of the 23 French funds régionaux d'art contemporain, FRAC for short , German: Regional Fund for Contemporary Art .

The FRAC s are public collections of contemporary visual art in 23 major cities in France , where exhibitions by current artists are also regularly shown. The FRAC in Dunkirk was set up for the eponymous French region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais .

Within Dunkirk, the FRAC is the youngest collection after the Dunkirk Fine Arts Museum in the city center, which shows ancient art, and the LAAC between the city and port, which shows modern art between 1940 and 1980.

collection

The collection, founded in 1982, comprised almost 1,500 works of art and design objects by 2014. An initially large core group of historical works by Arte Povera includes Minimal Art , Conceptual Art , New Realism , Pop Art and Fluxus .

building

In autumn 2013, the FRAC moved into a building in the Dunkirk harbor area in the Grand Large district, designed by the architects Lacaton and Vassal.

The basis was an abandoned shipyard hall, hall AP2, which the architects largely retained because of the fascinating spatial experience. In addition, a double was built in the direction of the North Sea. The construction of the additional hall, which offers five levels, consists of prefabricated parts , which allows flexible and free floor plan design . A pedestrian bridge connects the two components as a covered street along the “inner facade” of the FRAC. The old hall AP2 can serve as a supplement to the exhibition rooms, e.g. B. for large temporary exhibitions, for the presentation of large-format works of art or for public events such as concerts, trade fairs, sports, theater or even circus performances.
