Willem van Aelst

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Willem van Aelst (born May 16, 1627 in Utrecht or Delft, † after 1683 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch still life painter .

Life

Willem van Aelst was the student of his uncle Evert van Aelsts . On November 9, 1643 he was accepted into the Delft Guild of St. Luke . He lived in France from 1645 to 1649 and then in Italy until 1656 . There he worked for the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Ferdinand II. De Medici , among others . In Italy he worked closely with Otto Marseus van Schrieck , who probably painted insects on his paintings more often.

From 1657 he stayed in Amsterdam, where he probably worked until his death. His students included Isaac Denies, Ernst Stuven, Rachel Ruysch , Geertje Pieters (1636–1712) and, above all, Maria van Oosterwijk (1630–1693).

Willem van Aelst was an important painter of flower, fruit and hunting still lifes. He was an excellent colourist and achieved a high level of mastery in the rendering of fabrics, metals and bird feathers.
