Otto van Marseus Schrieck (* about 1619 / 20 in Nijmegen , † 1678 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch painter of still life .

life and work

Little is known about the origins and training of Marseus van Schrieck. Presumably, according to the Dutch tradition, he first traveled to France and then in 1648, accompanied by the painter Mattheus Withoos, to Italy, where he worked for the Grand Duke of Tuscany Ferdinand II. De Medici (probably Cosimo III acquired and owned) was active. There he met Willem van Aelst , with whom he had already been in Paris, at the court of Anna of Austria, the wife of Louis XIII. had worked (between 1643 and 1648) From 1652 at the latest he worked in Rome and was a member of the Dutch painters' guild "Schildersbent". Here he was led under the name Snuffelaer. He could have returned to the Netherlands with Willem van Aelst in 1657, but there is evidence that he settled in Amsterdam in 1663 at the latest. Stays in England are also briefly mentioned in the literature of Houbraken, which can only have taken place before the time 1649 (i.e. before the death of Charles I).

He had a particular fondness for colorful insects and reptiles, which he kept in terrariums and which he liked to immortalize on his works. The search for this animal gave it the nickname "Snuffelaer" (Eng. Sniffer).

In the beginning he mainly painted lush bouquets of flowers, from the 1660s he turned to depictions from the world of small animals. It was only this late work that gave him fame and lasting recognition. He is considered the main representative of the forest still life he developed (often referred to as Sottobosco ). Even today, this designation does not do him justice to his complete satisfaction. His works are still given a brief description such as “blue winds, toads and insects” in art history and in exhibitions. He also shaped painting processes such as the butterfly print.

In summer 2017, the State Museum Schwerin dedicated the exhibition The Menagerie to Medusa to van Schrieck . Otto Marseus van Schrieck and the Scholars .
