The Leipzig cotton spinning mill is a 10-  hectare factory site on the edge of the Leipzig district of Lindenau . Parts of it are now used as galleries and studios as well as gastronomically.

history

The Leipziger Cotton Spinning Company, founded in 1884, developed into the largest cotton spinning company in continental Europe within a quarter of a century . After it was founded, a real factory town with over 20 production buildings, workers' apartments, kindergartens and a recreation area grew in the west of Leipzig. In 1907 the factory had reached its greatest expansion. Cotton was processed on around 100,000 m² with 240,000 spindles. Up to 4,000 people worked here in three shifts until 1989, when production was stopped after German reunification .

Craftsmen, freelancers, people with the desire for individual living and, above all, artists looking for affordable and atmospheric workspaces then settled on the area. Many artists who belong to the so-called " New Leipzig School " were the pioneers of this revitalization. Over half of all space has now been rented again.

There are twelve galleries on the site, including a. The Grass is Greener , ASPN , b2 , Dogenhaus , Eigen + Art , Gallery Filipp Rosbach , Gallery Kleindienst , shop for Nothing , maerzgalerie , the nonprofit arts center Hall 14 z and around 100 artists (. As Neo Rauch , Rosa Loy , Matthias Weischer , Jim Whiting , Tilo Baumgärtel , Tom Fabritius ). Entrepreneurs - architecture firms, bicycle manufacturers, fashion designers and printers - have also settled in the cotton mill, as have a goldsmith, a ceramics workshop, a cinema, a porcelain factory, an artist's supply shop and catering facilities.

From 2002 to 2012, the five-story “Hall 14” was renovated and converted into a center for contemporary art. The renovation was honored with the Hieronymus Lotter Prize for Monument Preservation from the Leipzig City Cultural Foundation. The total costs of the renovation amounted to around 1.2 million euros, of which more than half (690,000 euros) was funded by the Urban Redevelopment East project, 241,500 euros came from the owner and 103,500 euros from municipal funds of the city of Leipzig.

In 2016, the Leipzig city council decided to renovate and convert Hall 7. The LOFFT and the Leipziger Tanztheater moved into the hall in 2019 . Another planned move of the Natural History Museum was stopped for cost reasons due to static problems.
