The publisher Antaeus (to November 2012: Edition Antaeus ) is a since 2000 by publicist and political activist Götz Kubitschek guided German book publisher based in the manor Schnellroda , community Steigra . Scientists assign the small publishing house, which is dedicated to the anti-democratic “ conservative revolution ”, to a network of the New Right ; He is referred to in specialist circles as the "house publisher" of the new right think tank Institute for State Policy (IfS). The publisher also offers books from other right-wing or right-wing extremist publishers.

organization

The publishing house Antaios, based in Steigra , Schnellroda district, has been listed in the commercial register at the Stendal district court under the commercial register number HRA 4730 since July 5, 2014 . The owner is the registered businessman (eK) Götz Kubitschek.

The publisher's titles are listed in the Directory of Deliverable Books (VLB).

history

The Antaios publishing house was founded in 2000 as Edition Antaios and has been under the direction of Götz Kubitschek ever since. In November 2012 the name was changed to Verlag Antaios . He was originally based in Bad Vilbel in Hesse and later in the Saxon state capital Dresden ; Since 2003 the small publisher has been based at the Schnellroda manor in Steigra , Saxony-Anhalt , where the Institute for State Policy is also based.

The founding group included u. a. Karlheinz Weißmann , one of the main representatives of the New Right in Germany and co-founder of the journal Sezession in 2003 . The historian Helmut Kellershohn from the Duisburg Institute for Linguistic and Social Research (DISS) considers it to be another “bang for the young conservative intellectuals from the ranks of the German Guilds ”.

With regard to the naming, Kellershohn notes a reminiscence of Hans Freyer's writing Antäus and a reference to Ernst Jünger , whom Kubitschek admires. For the religious scholar Horst Junginger , the publishing house stands in the tradition of the “ Conservative Revolution ” and Jünger's magazine Antaios , which appeared from 1959 to 1971. It is named after the giant Antaios from Greek mythology, living in North Africa , who hunted locals and foreigners and got his strength from his mother Gaia (the earth). He was finally defeated by Heracles by lifting him in the air and strangling him.

The economist Arne Schimmer , NPD cadre and employee of the party newspaper German Voice , was editor at Edition Antaios from 2003 to 2004 . According to Kubitschek, the contractual relationship ended after Schimmer moved to the Saxon state parliament in 2004 for the NPD Saxony . Mathias Brodkorb from the information portal Endstation Rechts later showed that the publisher was present in the scene under the editor-in-chief Schimmer through “reviews and discursive [] articles” in the right-wing extremist, NPD-affiliated magazine Hier & Jetzt . The extremism researcher Uwe Backes summed up in 2012, also considering the position towards Andreas Molau (German voice) , that Kubitschek and the publisher maintain an “elitist distance” from the NPD .

In 2007, the Federal Government answered a major question from MPs Ulla Jelpke , Petra Pau and Sevim Dağdelen and the left-wing parliamentary group in the German Bundestag on the extreme right in Germany that the Antaios edition was not an object of observation for the protection of the Constitution at that time , but this does not rule out that it “sees itself as part of a so-called new right, defined according to other criteria”.

In 2010, the publication Der Fall Sarrazin - An Analysis by the Institute for State Policy was represented on the Amazon bestseller list. The specialist journalist Andreas Speit rated the publication as an attempt to “modernize and popularize right thinking ”. In the background there is an “ensemble of right-wing intellectuals”, which also includes the Institute for State Policy.

In the past the publisher exhibited several times at the Leipzig Book Fair . Later, Kubitschek and Felix Menzel organized a new fair called zwischentag (original spelling) in Berlin-Wilmersdorf , whose exhibitors included his publisher. In an interview with the television magazine Klartext ( rbb ) in 2012, he spoke of an “ethnic continuity” among Germans that is worthy of preservation.

In February 2014, the German branch of the online retailer Amazon.com removed the publisher's twelve latest books from its range. This and the failure to give reasons were criticized by Lorenz Jäger on FAZ.net and by Marc Felix Serrao in the Süddeutsche Zeitung . The historian Volker Weiß criticized the journalists' expressions of sympathy for "ultra-right [] circles []". After the events at Amazon, the Munich sociology professor Armin Nassehi published an exchange of letters with Kubitschek in which he criticized the mail order company.

At the beginning of the Frankfurt Book Fair in October 2018 it was announced that the publisher would have been sold to Thomas Veigel - AfD member and owner of the newly founded Loci-Verlag. The publishing house was to be continued as an imprint , the program management should be taken over by Kubitschek's wife Ellen Kositza . From the outset, well-founded doubts about the seriousness of this transaction were expressed in the media. It was also pointed out that Kubitschek's publishing house had not registered a booth at the book fair, but that the announcement of the sale made it the focus of media interest. After the book fair, Kubitschek confirmed that the above report had been a deception.

Alignment

In 2004, the specialist journalist for right-wing extremism Anton Maegerle described the Antaios edition in a tribune essay on ultra-right think tanks as a “ preliminary organization ” for the weekly newspaper Junge Freiheit . It is also co-financed by the Institute for State Policy. According to the publicists Stephan Braun , Alexander Geisler and Martin Gerster (2007), the edition takes on the legacy of the “ Conservative Revolution ” and mainly publishes studies by the IfS. Together with the IfS and Junge Freiheit, it forms a "triangle organized based on the division of labor". The publishing house is designed to consolidate the “new right ideological basis”. For right-wing extremism researchers Samuel Salzborn (2015) and Helmut Kellershohn (2016), there is an “operational division of tasks” between the three organizations. According to Kellershohn, Antaios Verlag takes on the task of “publishing work results that result from the work of the institute or that have arisen in the context of this network.” According to Kellershohn (2016), this “original conception of a division of labor between JF , IfS, Verlag [...] as the starting point and core of a young conservative hegemony project [but] failed for the time being ”. The question of the relationship to the alternative for Germany led to "wing battles" within the "young conservative leadership", which "deepened parallel to the wing dispute in the AfD". Kellershohn (2004), Martin Langebach (2015), Armin Pfahl-Traughber (2016) and Volker Weiß (2016) come to the conclusion that Antaios is a “house publisher” of the IfS.

As early as 2002, right-wing extremism researcher Hajo Funke pointed out that the New Right was spinning an “ideological and organizational web”, which not only included the “publication series” Edition Antaios and the institutions mentioned above, but also a. a. the Weikersheim Study Center and the Danubia Munich fraternity . The political scientist Rainer Benthin considered this New Right 2008 in the narrower sense to be “an intellectual or cultural variant” that is connected in the “right-wing radical movement context”, among other things. a. via central forums such as the IfS with the magazine Sezession and the publisher Edition Antaios . In 2004, the extremism researcher Armin Pfahl-Traughber also included the publishing house zur Neue Rechten, which he in turn assigned to intellectual right-wing extremism. According to the political scientist Elmar Vieregge , the IfS project with Sezession and Edition Antaios is pursuing a "fundamental [] change in the political climate in Germany according to the law". Strategically, as Fabian Virchow from the research focus right-wing extremism / neo-Nazism explained, “with recourse to representatives of the anti-democratic and human rights-hostile conservative revolution of the first decades of the 20th century, on the one hand, the reinterpretation of terminology and the achievement of interpretative sovereignty, and on the other hand, training a new right-wing elite occupying positions of power in society. "

In the course of the campaign “Division Antaios” (2010) “[Kubitschek] adapted his publisher's logo, a snake , stylistically to the turtle logo [by CasaPound] and also placed three arrows pointing upwards to the right under the snake , as a sort of replica of the three arrows of the anti-fascist Iron Front pointing downwards to the left, ”said Kellershohn.

Julian Bruns, Kathrin Glösel and Natascha Strobl , who wrote a fundamental volume on the Identitarian Movement in 2014 , consider the publisher's “serious appearance” to be “fragile” and consider Antaios to be part of the political and journalistic environment of the Identitarians.

The publications reach both right-wing extremists and “actors on the right fringes of the AfD ”, according to Funke (2016).

Patrick Keßler points out the connection between naming and the tendency to violence (2018): "The naming Antaios [...], who was an almost indomitable giant from Greek mythology, who decorated the temple for his father with the skulls of his defeated opponents and invited the strangers to a wrestling match [...], suggests that within the 'New Right' there is a certain tendency to violence [...]. "

program

In 2009, Kellershohn made about 50 titles in the publishing program, including "own products" of the publishing house management as well as people moving around him, including regular authors of Junge Freiheit such as Günter Zehm , Thorsten Hinz and Ernst Nolte . The political scientist Steffen Kailitz emphasized that the acquisition of the historian Nolte's authors in 2005 made it possible to understand his approach to the New Right in terms of content. The publishing program was built around the series Perspektiven (introductions to people) and Topics (terminology). Thematically, the publishing house was devoted to the Hohmann affair and contemporary right-wing conservatives such as Klaus Hornung (commemorative publication for his 75th birthday), but above all historical figures of the “Conservative Revolution” such as Oswald Spengler , Ernst Jünger and Friedrich Georg Jünger as well as older representatives of the New Right such as Mircea Eliade and the avowed “fascist” Armin Mohler (several works, including a commemorative publication for his 80th birthday) An exchange of letters between the right-wing extremist Hans-Dietrich Sander and the "crown lawyer of the Third Reich" Carl Schmitt was postponed. According to Hajo Funke, “Ernst Jünger and the entire anti-democratic arsenal [...] are combined” in one publishing house. It is about an “ethnically pure” republic that is directed against “the values of pluralism and respect for human rights ”. Antaios published "a whole library of representatives of the so-called Conservative Revolution, fascists and anti-Semites ". According to Weiß, Antaios has “more classically fascist ideas than specifically National Socialist ideas”, whereby “the transitions [...] are fluid”.

In 2011 the publisher published the anti-Muslim texts by blogger Fjordman , which were the ideological basis for the Norwegian right- wing terrorist Anders Behring Breivik . In 2014 the publisher's edition nordost published the German translation of the “ key novel ” by Domenico di Tullio , defense lawyer from CasaPound Italia , about this neo-fascist Italian movement. According to Volker Weiß, the publisher is also gradually “importing theory from France” and, in the course of this, has a new translation of the novel ( Das Heerlager der Heiligen ) by the monarchist French writer Jean Raspail as well as a “combat pamphlet” by Renaud Camus , who is known as the “thought leader” of the right-wing extremist Front National is considered to be brought out. According to political scientist Jan-Werner Müller, Kubitschek specializes in nationally conservative or downright reactionary authors . According to the educational scientist Micha Brumlik (2016), who is a member of the group of editors of the journal Blätter for German and International Politics , Antaios publishes “right-wing extremist literature”. According to the political scientist Claus Leggewie , the publishing house specializes in “new right works and relevant theory imports from France”; extreme right-wing publications, including bestsellers by Raspail and Camus, would be published.

The publishing house Antaios currently (as of 2015) offers its own books in a total of six series: series kaplaken , Antaios theme , state policy manual , Jena lectures , Antaios essay and edition nordost .

"Kaplaken" series

The book series Kaplaken , which has been published since 2007 and in which works by Bernard Willms , Karlheinz Weißmann and Götz Kubitschek have already been published, has particular relevance for the “self- image ” of the IfS . Furthermore, the state policy handbook , published by IfS functionaries Erik Lehnert and Karlheinz Weißmann, is considered to be an example of “the systematic development and communication of the worldview of the 'Conservative Revolution'” ( Volker Weiß ). The editors of the yearbook Extremism & Democracy , Uwe Backes , Alexander Gallus and Eckhard Jesse , stated in 2010 that it tried to reinterpret terms.

Authors / Editors

Among the published authors are quite a few contributors to the journal Sezession . According to the historian Volker Weiß, there are also “people who were previously active as tough neo-Nazis ”.
