The look to the right (since 2004: bnr.de ) is an SPD -related information portal that aims to provide timely “information about right-wing extremist activities” (subtitles).

Editors and authors

The information service Blick nach Rechts emerged from a “Press Committee Democratic Initiative” (PDI) founded by the Austrian journalist Kurt Hirsch and has appeared every two weeks since December 1, 1980. The information service was closed in 1983 due to financial problems. A re-establishment under SPD leadership took place in 1984, Kurt Hirsch was an editor until 1987, when he was dismissed on suspicion of working for the GDR Ministry for State Security .

Today's publisher is the Institute for Information and Documentation eV , after it was the journalist Helmut Lölhöffel from 1996 until his death in 2018 . The economic sponsor is the Berliner vorwärts Verlagsgesellschaft mbH (publisher of the SPD party newspaper Vorwärts , a full subsidiary of the SPD media holding ddvg ). The patron is the SPD politician Ute Vogt .

The BNR does not provide a fixed list of authors. Freelancers are various political scientists , journalists and experts in the field. These include, among others, the specialist journalists Anton Maegerle , Andrea Röpke and Andreas Speit as well as the staff of the constitutional protection Armin Pfahl-Traughber and Thomas Pfeiffer . The late author was Heiner Lichtenstein (1932–2010).

Structure and offer

The magazine was published as a printed edition from 1984 to 2004 and has been an online magazine ever since. These were temporarily available as e-papers for annual subscribers. The bi-weekly edition of the bnr (25 editions per year) including the e-paper has been discontinued. The separate dispatch of a printed version has also been discontinued. . While current articles can be read free of charge, access to the archive is only available by subscription.

The homepage of the BNR refers to three main sections:

  • BNR aktuell for the latest news, event information, tips for action.
  • an archive containing all issues back to 1996. The archive is only available to subscribers.
  • an "Active" page with a calendar of events.

A search function enables articles in the archive to be found for a search term, graded according to relevance. For security reasons, the search result is deleted immediately after calling up a single page.

Small request from the CDU / CSU parliamentary group

On September 28, 2004, the CDU / CSU parliamentary group made a small inquiry to the federal government regarding the promotion of the BNR with tax money. “The large number of links” on the homepage was criticized for “obviously left-wing extremist movements, some of which are also mentioned in reports on the protection of the constitution”. Ten local anti- fascist groups or alliances, the association of those persecuted by the Nazi regime - the Association of Antifascists and two websites were listed. For some of these groups, reference was made to their assessment by the Federal Office and the state authorities for the protection of the constitution . With this, the questioners justified their suspicion "that the 'Blick nach Rechts' (look to the right) is a platform financed with taxpayers money, also for spreading left-wing extremist slogans under the label of fighting right-wing extremism."

The then federal government rejected this suspicion :

“This is an important contribution by civil society in the fight against right-wing extremist movements. The results of the last state elections show that the democratic forces must not let up in their work for democracy and tolerance and against extremism and violence. "

The BNR was funded in 2000 with a total of 56,497.75 DM from funds from the Federal Ministry of the Interior . The question of ownership did not play a role. The "concern of the 'bnr' to inform and educate about current developments and backgrounds of the right-wing extremist scene" is "worthy of support". The federal government also announced: "The imprint of the 'bnr' indicates that the 'bnr' does not adopt the content of third-party websites to which its pages are linked. In addition, the 'bnr' demands its Users to point out incorrect or illegal or changed content of such third party websites. " The links complained about had previously been deleted from the homepage.
