Michael Ley (* 1955 in Konstanz ) is an Austrian political scientist .

Life

Ley studied sociology in Berlin and Bremen and completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck. Until the dissolution of the institute in 2005 he was director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Politics, Religion and Anthropology of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society in Innsbruck.

Criticism of Islamism

In 2012 Ley published “The Coming Revolt” with Wilhelm Fink, Munich. In July 2015, his book “Der Sumord des Abendlandes. The Islamization of Europe ” . In the Viennese daily newspaper "Die Presse" Ley presented some theses from his book. In 2018 Ley was co-editor of the volume National Masochism in the publishing house Antaios by the new right publicist Götz Kubitschek .

In “Suicide of the West” , Ley outlines his Enlightenment-oriented vision of the development of Islam from its Christian roots to the religion of today. As a solution to the development crisis in Islamic societies, Ley cites the reform example of Reform Judaism from the 19th century onwards, which shows the way in which a legal religion can become compatible with the Enlightenment.

For Ley, orthodox and radical Islam is a scourge of humanity. Together with the historian Egon Flaig , Ley describes Sharia Islam as "the worst threat to democracy and human rights in the 21st century". Only an Islam without Sharia is compatible with human rights. But this vision remains a long way off, reality looks different. According to Ley, the “Islamization of Europe” is the most visible change in most European societies. Opinions were divided on this development: While liberal and educated citizens view the increasing influence of conservative and radical Islam from Ley's point of view with great misgivings and would see the future of the continent rather bleak, their so-called progressive opponents interpreted this process as cultural enrichment and overcoming of a national state that has become obsolete. The struggle of the masterminds of a radical post-national Europe applies to every national identity: The autochthonous Europeans should obviously renounce any national, cultural, religious and ultimately also a traditional sexual identity. Even the most radical communist intellectuals would not have gone so far in their demands at the time. The discussions took on almost grotesque forms. The elites of society would not tire of accusing large sections of their own population of racism and xenophobia, while large sections of the population would long ago have lost confidence in the supposed political and media masterminds.

Well-meaning contemporaries tried to take a mediating position by carefully weighing the arguments of the conflicting culture fighters and taking note of the existing disintegration of many Muslim migrants with regret, but at the same time referring to supposed historical traditions of a cosmopolitan Islam that were to experience a postmodern renaissance in Europe . Christians offered a dialogue of religions in order to remove existing prejudices and were ruefully ashamed of the crusades of an imperial Christianity. “Green movement praises their Muslim greengrocer as an icon of successful integration. Feminists prefer to remain silent about the machinations of young men with an Arab migration background ”. Bought brides and honor killings weren't among the favorite topics of her social criticism either. Educational researchers boasted that the number of Muslim high school graduates was increasing due to increased integration offers, while their critics pointed to the increasing number of criminal offenses committed by Islamic migrants.

According to Ley, the “Islam defenders” put the exorbitant hatred of Jews among many Muslims and the contempt for Christianity into perspective with what Ley said, accusing the local population of anti-Islamic racism. The political and intellectual elites are helpless in the face of integration problems and would prefer to keep quiet about the mess they have left. A public debate about the future of the European immigration countries is therefore avoided as far as possible. The answer to the civilization crash can therefore only lie in a return to the foundations of European cultures: the national, ethnic, religious and cultural diversity and the European values of humanism and the Enlightenment.

According to Peter Münch from the SZ , Ley does not want to differentiate between radical and moderate Islam. In a panel discussion, Ley did not shy away from historical parallels with the statement that Europe was "facing an Islamization and a final solution of Judaism ".
