Antaios (subtitle: Journal for a Free World ) was a bimonthly cultural magazine published by Ernst Klett Verlag in Stuttgart from 1959 to 1971 . Ernst Jünger and Mircea Eliade acted as editors, the editor in charge was Philipp Wolff-Windegg, a nephew of the publisher Ernst Klett.

Ernst Klett wanted to found his own conservative cultural magazine at the beginning of the 1950s. The model was the magazine Zalmoxis , which had been published by Mircea Eliade and which had dealt with topics of symbol theory. Klett won Eliade, who lives in Paris, as the first editor for the new periodical.

The range of topics should include spiritual, religious, mythological and psychological topics. Klett was in contact with authors from the Eranos circle , whom he wanted to offer a platform. For the position of second editor, he unsuccessfully asked Aldous Huxley , Joseph Campbell and Karl Jaspers . Ernst Jünger finally agreed.

Janus was initially discussed as the title until Friedrich Georg Jünger , brother of Ernst Jünger, suggested naming the sheet after Antaios , a giant from Greek mythology.

The authors primarily include representatives of conservative and right-wing ideas such as Julius Evola , Ernst Benz , Will-Erich Peuckert and Marcel Jouhandeau . However, Antaios also provided a forum for authors such as Furio Jesi , Hans Kayser , Laurens van der Post , Kathleen Raine and Ernesto de Martino .

Since the sales figures were declining and the Klett-Verlag also had another (and more commercially successful) cultural magazine in its range in 1968 with the takeover of Merkur , it was decided in 1971 to discontinue Antaios .
