history

From World War I to 1949

The farmer Leopold Stocker founded the publishing house in 1917 in the Graz Salzamtsgasse 7 as "Heimatverlag Leopold Stocker" after the city council approved the opening of a bookstore on April 13 of the same year. The suggestion for founding this publishing house came in 1916 from the Styrian homeland poet Peter Rosegger , with whom Stocker was friends.

Immediately after the First World War the publishing production of agricultural literature and politicized writings that deal with the consequences of war in the face of doom began kuk monarchy of Austria-Hungary occupied. In 1918, Stocker published titles such as Die Rindviehzucht Steiermarks and its promotion after the war, as well as land reform! and 65,000 million war debts . In 1919 the basic rules of seed production , profitable field vegetable cultivation as well as soil, plants, fertilization followed , but from the beginning also political tendencies such as the goals of German agricultural policy or what now? Contemporary reflections on the near future of the German people .

From 1920 on, Stocker increasingly emphasized the German-Volkish publishing profile. In 1921 he gave the first name advisor Give the children German names! by the Germanist Ferdinand Khull-Kholwald (1854–1942) and in 1924 Otto Jauker's German History . Above all, however, he became the house publisher of the fanatical anti-Semite Karl Huffnagl, who used the pseudonym Karl Paumgartten . Paumgartten published the pamphlet Judaism and Social Democracy with Leopold Stocker in 1920 , Juda in 1921 . Critical considerations about the nature and work of Judaism , 1924 the inflammatory book Juden-Fibel and in the same year the anti- republic polemic Repablick . In an advertisement dated November 30, 1921, Leopold Stocker advertised Paumgartten's racist work Juda with the words: “Order plenty! (...) You earn money and help to free the German people from cancer damage ”. In 1929 Stocker published the anti- pacifist polemic In the West Nothing New and His True Meaning by the German national doctor Gottfried Nickl and in 1938 the volume of poems Germany, we believed in you by the same author. Leopold Stocker announced the new publication on June 23, 1938 in the Börsenblatt :

“From these illegal poems the Ostmark speaks of a believing longing and a determined will for unity in the Greater German Empire , revolutionary defiance of German freedom, the fight against treason, unshakable loyalty to the German people despite prohibition and need, love for the Führer , the unifier and liberator of the German nation . Every German bookseller should make it their business to distribute this unique book as far as possible, which is a loyal German creed and sends greetings from the liberated Ostmark to all German national comrades. "

Around 1930 the company founder renamed his company Leopold Stocker Verlag . In the 1930s, Leopold Stocker published the trilogy of novels A people stands up! by the Upper Austrian local poet Karl Itzinger . The first part ( Das Blutgericht am Haushamerfeld ), which Stocker had already published in 1925 under another title ( Der Bauerntod ), was banned for 16 months under the Austro-Fascist government of Kurt Schuschnigg . Seven days after Adolf Hitler announced on March 15, 1938 on Heldenplatz in Vienna "before history, my homeland would enter the German Reich", Stocker wrote in the Börsenblatt:

“During the struggle and the ordeal of the last 5 years in Austria's system, these books were a strengthening of tens of thousands of party and national comrades in German-Austria to persevere in the struggle against the government and in the victorious faith because the poet Karl Itzinger Shining examples in this people's war and witnesses of the sacrificed and painful struggle for freedom in Upper Austria, the home of the Führer Adolf Hitler, showed where the clerical power under the Habsburg Ferdinand II with fire and sword and expulsion from the homeland struggled for freedom of mind and body People persecuted - then just as it is now. "

In addition to novels such as Ein Rufer in deutscher Not (1937) and Unterm Fronjoch (1939) by Richard Neudorfer (1900–1977), a secondary school teacher from Wels , or You should be my witness (1938) by the Kronstadt pastor Egon Hajek (1888–1963) The Leopold Stocker Verlag also published political propaganda literature such as Anton Steininger's (1898–1968) Ostmark Trilogy (1938/1939) or Otto Hermann Reich von Rohrwig's Der Freiheitskampf der Ostmark-Deutschen (1942).

After the collapse of the National Socialist German Empire , publishing began again after a brief interruption in 1946. First, works of fiction were reissued under new titles, such as B. Mirabella by Rudolf Schnehen (1868–1932), a chief forester from the Styrian town of Eisenerz , which had already appeared in 1925 as Unter dem Salzburger Krummstab , or the novel Der silent Freund by Fritz Stüber-Gunther (1872–1922), a Viennese Tax officials, whose satirical short stories about the imperial and royal metropolis enjoyed some popularity at the beginning of the 20th century. His novel was published in 1919 by a Stuttgart publisher. But political writings quickly returned to the program, such as The Viability of Austria by Anton Tautscher (1906–1976) and Ernst Kübler .

National Socialist confessional novels such as Neudorfers Unterm Fronjoch were reprinted under harmless-sounding titles ( Das neue Wesen , 1950). From 1919 Leopold Stocker had published the magazine Deutsche Landheimat (subtitle: Zeitschrift für Landwirtschaft, Volkswohl und Heimat ), which appeared from 1921 under the title Landheimat ( weekly journal for modern agriculture and rural people ) and from 1927 to 1944 as Der progressliche Landwirt (subtitle: Journal for the rural family ). This was followed by a five-year break, and from October 1949 the paper was again produced every six months.

Since 1950

After Leopold Stocker's death in December 1950, his daughter Ilse Dvorak-Stocker (1922–2011) ran the publishing house, initially together with her mother Marianne Stocker.

The Bienenwelt has been published by Leopold Stocker Verlag since 1959 : the specialist journal for contemporary beekeepers , since 1971 the traditional association journal Alpenländische Bienenzeitung , since 1985 the bulletin of the Association of Austrian Fleckvieh breeders Fleckviehzucht in Austria (since 2005 Fleckvieh Austria ) and since 1991 the specialist journal for sheep- and goat farmers Schafe aktuell (since 2001 sheep and goats current ).

Since 1995

Her son Wolfgang Dvorak-Stocker has been managing director and owner of the publishing house since 1995 . In 2001, Dvorak-Stocker took over the Graz-based publisher for collectors , which produced regional and cookbooks in order to “expand its position on the domestic market”, and at the end of 2004 he founded the Ares-Verlag for its political and historical program . At the beginning of 2005 he reorganized the publishing house because it had "experienced dynamic development over the past two decades". Since then, Leopold Stocker Verlag has been operating as Leopold Stocker Verlag GmbH and the magazine division became independent under company law as Landwirt Agrarmedien GmbH . The Landwirt Agrarmedien GmbH is also the owner of the Grazer advertising agency Indesign , which Alexandra Neuhold founded in 2000. Regarding the spin-off of the Ares publishing house, Dvorak-Stocker said:

“As far as the content is concerned, we have set the bar high. In any case, the topics are exciting and often controversial. We don't want to make a program for well-groomed boredom, and also not one in which the same opinions of the media maelstrom are verbosely chewed on. The books of the ARES publishing house should not only provide essential information, analyzes and hard facts, but also take a position and thus challenge the reader. "

From the end of 1999 the Leopold Stocker Verlag (or since 2005 Ares) published the quarterly magazine Neue Order , which was founded in 1958 by Ernst Strachwitz and Franz Frank (born February 24, 1919 in Graz; † September 5, 1999).

public perception

Use of the Styrian coat of arms

On March 23, 2004, the Greens in the Landtag of Styria applied to the Leopold Stocker Verlag to revoke the right to use the state coat of arms , which was granted in 1992 by then Governor Josef Krainer , because, in their opinion, “the publisher has a large number of anti-Semitic, racist and right-wing extremist authors as well as history revisionists a platform. This motion for a resolution was rejected by all other parliamentary groups on March 15, 2005, because it would not be possible to withdraw it without changing the national coat of arms law beforehand.

Lawsuit against MayDay 2000

On March 10, 2006, the Graz Regional Court for Civil Law Matters dismissed the actions of the Leopold Stocker Verlag against the left-wing Graz initiative MayDay 2000 . The terms "racist", "anti-Semitic" and "right-wing extremist" in connection with certain publisher publications are permissible value judgments that can be based on "a certain factual substrate". The publisher appealed the judgment in vain. Mayday activists attracted public attention when they launched a signature campaign against the publisher. They protested u. a. on the other hand, that the publisher was allowed to wear the Styrian coat of arms, which is awarded for “special services in the interest of the state”.

Advertising space at ÖBB

In 2007, Wolfgang Dvorak-Stocker rented the ÖBB EuroCity connection 656 between Graz and Vienna as advertising space. Attempts by the ÖBB to terminate the one-year contract retrospectively were rejected by Dvorak-Stocker; the contract was not extended after December 2007.

"New Order" magazine

Over the since 1999 Leopold Stocker publishing house published quarterly journal New Order , the journalist wrote Karl Pfeifer in the Jewish Internet magazine haGalil on April 29, 2005: "The quarterly Grazer magazine, New Order '(NO), which acts as a bridge builder from Right-wing conservatism on right-wing extremism has intensified its right-wing extremist and anti-Semitic tendencies, lately through the collaboration of right-wing extremist authors. "

Right-wing extremism researcher Andreas Peham from the Documentation Archive of the Austrian Resistance (DÖW) locates the NO in right-wing extremism . The DÖW described the political orientation of the magazine as follows:

"So uncritical or positive statements can be found in the New Order over ideological foundations of fascism ( folkish nationalism , elitism , construction of an organic state - similar to the ideology of, national community ') and its front position to democracy, the individualism and liberalism as such as nationalist to 'revisionist' historical considerations on the subjects of Auschwitz and forced laborers . Individual contributions contain the propagation of anti-Semitic and racist resentments as well as the contempt of minorities. "

"The Grazer from Stocker Leopold Verlag published quarterly journal New Order (NO) transformed in recent years from a right-wing blade to a central organ of the bridge builders to the far right. In it, the NO apparently inherits the auditorium . "

Authors of the New Order magazine include: Björn Clemens , Götz Kubitschek , Martin Lichtmesz , Alexander Markovics ( IB and Compact author), Philip Stein , Angelika Willig .

Ares Publishing House

The Ares publishing house, named after the Greek god of war, says it allows "conservative 'positions in the broadest sense to have their say" and represents "the demanding non-fiction book and political-historical title on a scientific level". As one of his first books he published the main work of a representative of the New Right , Caspar von Schrenck-Notzings , whose struggle is primarily to “re-educate the German people”. Another title that was published immediately after the company was founded is Multiculturalism and the Politics of Guilt by the American political scientist Paul Gottfried .
