Albrecht Rothacher

Albrecht Rothacher (* 1955 in Erlangen ) is a book author, EU diplomat and is considered an Eastern European and East Asian specialist.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1974 at the Old Electoral High School in Bensheim , he did his military service with the Supply Company 360, a unit of the 12th Panzer Division, in Bad Mergentheim . From 1975 he studied social sciences at the Technical University of Berlin , at the University of Konstanz and as a Fulbright scholar at the University of Bridgeport and Yale University in Connecticut. He graduated in 1978 and received his PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics in 1982 . In the meantime he was research assistant at the International Christian University in Mitaka and at the European University Institute in Florence .

Rothacher has been a European civil servant since 1984, mostly in the diplomatic service of the European Union. a. First Counselor to the EU Delegation to the OSCE in Vienna (2005–2009) and Director of Public Relations at the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) in Singapore (2001–2005). 2011–15 he was envoy counselor to the EU delegation in Tokyo . In 2003, Rothacher founded the now very reputable "Asia Europe Journal" (Springer Verlag) as a quarterly social science journal and was editor-in-chief until 2010. From 2015 to 2017 he was an exchange diplomat in the European department of the Quai d'Orsay with security and Asian issues. Since then he has been Head of the Board of Directors for Russian Economic Affairs in the European External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels.

Awards

Rothacher is the holder of the Great Gold Medal for Services to the Republic of Austria and the Robert Schuman Medal of the European Commission .
