Rudolf Gustav Ardelt (born May 27, 1944 in Bad Hall , Upper Austria) is an Austrian historian. He is Professor of Modern History and Contemporary History at the Johannes Kepler University Linz (JKU). From 2000 to 2007 he was rector of the JKU.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1962, Rudolf G. Ardelt studied history , German and philosophy at the University of Vienna . In 1964 he continued his studies at the University of Salzburg . Five years later he did his doctorate with Fritz Fellner and Erika Weinzierl at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Salzburg, where he worked as a university assistant at the Institute for History. In 1982, influenced by Erika Weinzierl, he completed his habilitation on “Friedrich Adler. Problems of a personality development at the turn of the century ”as a university lecturer for general history of the modern age at the humanities faculty of the University of Salzburg.

After his habilitation, Ardelt was appointed head of the newly founded branch of the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the History of the Labor Movement in Salzburg.

In 1986 he became o.Univ.Prof. Appointed for Modern History and Contemporary History at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the JKU. From 1986 to 1996 and 2009 to 2010 he was in charge of the Institute for Modern History and Contemporary History. At the same time he directed the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for the History of the Labor Movement (Linz-Graz-Salzburg) together with Helmut Konrad ( University of Graz , Institute for History) (from 1995 Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Social and Cultural History). In addition, until the winter semester 1999/2000 he was teaching and examining at the Institute for History at the University of Salzburg for the theory of history.

From October 1, 2000 to September 30, 2007, Rudolf G. Ardelt was rector of the JKU. From 2005 to 2009 he was chairman of the umbrella association of Austrian universities and in this role led negotiations with the public service union on the new collective agreement for university staff. Retired on October 1, 2010.
