Dirk Bavendamm

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dirk Bavendamm (born May 20, 1938 in Dresden ) is a German historian , journalist , author and translator .

Life

Bavendamm is the son of the botanist Werner Bavendamm . He grew up after fleeing his family from the Soviet occupation zone in Reinbek , where 1958 he the High School took off.

Studies and first journalistic activity

He studied law, literature and history in Hamburg and Berlin and was trained by Gerhard Oestreich in 1967 with the dissertation From Revolution to Reform. The constitutional policy of the Hamburg Senate 1849/50 on Dr. phil. PhD.

As a student, he was alongside Henning von Löwis one of the regular authors of the NDR program “Politics for Young People”.

Work as a print and radio journalist, book author

He was editor of the weekly newspaper Die Zeit (1967–1969), editor and correspondent of the daily newspaper Die Welt (1969–1972) and correspondent of the Süddeutsche Zeitung (1972–1977). In addition, he continued to write radio and television programs for NDR and WDR . He has been working as a freelancer since 1980. To date, Bavendamm has written, translated and supervised around two dozen books in the fields of corporate and contemporary history . His corporate history clients included the Bertelsmann Group , the trading company C. Woermann , the Würth Group , Oetker and RWE Dea .

Historical book publications

Bavendamm also compiled a history of his hometown Reinbek as well as, together with the editorial staff, some annual chronicles from the Dortmunder Chronik-Verlag. In 1983 and 1993, Bavendamm published two extensive studies on US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt . In it he sets out the political and personal career of Roosevelt, concentrating above all on his politics in the run-up to the Second World War. The first book, although characterized as revisionist, was received positively in part. The book Roosevelt's War 1937-45 and the Mystery of Pearl Harbor was characterized by critics as a revision of history and a distortion of reality, since Bavendamm assigns Roosevelt significant responsibility at the beginning of the Second World War and at the same time Adolf Hitler is responsible for the creation of the Second Tried to relieve World War II .

From 1988 to 1997, Bavendamm headed the Bismarck Archives in Friedrichsruh until it was reorganized into a federal foundation , which is now called the Otto von Bismarck Foundation . From 2002 to 2004 he was managing director of the State and Economic Political Society in Hamburg.

Contribution to the book “1835–1985. 150 years of Bertelsmann "

In 1985, an anniversary book published by Bertelsmann was published with contributions by seven respected scientists and other authors such as Walter Kempowski and Kurt Biedenkopf , which Bavendamm was editorially coordinating. The authors relied on materials provided by Bertelsmann. The book also contained a chapter on the company's history (author Walter Kempowski), which Bertelsmann portrayed as a “resistance publisher”, although the company had done good business with the publication of Wehrmacht and Nazi literature.

At the end of the 1990s, when the Bertelsmann media group wanted to take over the American book publishing group Random House , in which many Jewish authors traditionally publish, doubts about the thesis of resistance publishing in the Third Reich grew, especially among the US public . The sociologist Hersch Fischler , in particular, countered this claim in 1998 and sharply criticized both Reinhard Mohn , then chairman of the Bertelsmann AG supervisory board, and Bavendamm. The immediate cause of criticism was an award given to the Bertelsmann Foundation by the Anti-Defamation League in Atlanta in autumn 1999. At the end of 1998, Bertelsmann had appointed an Independent Historical Commission chaired by the historian Saul Friedländer . The commission refused to involve Bavendamm because he had "not done the kind of contemporary history that we need to do". In January 2000, after the commission's first press conference, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reported that the role of Bertelsmann Verlag in the Third Reich as “Hitler's best supplier” actually had to be reassessed.

family

Bavendamm lives in Reinbek near Hamburg. He is married and has three daughters. His daughter Gundula is the director of the Foundation for Flight, Displacement and Reconciliation .
