Bernd Greiner (born July 20, 1952 in Pirmasens ) is a German historian , political scientist and Americanist .

life and work

Bernd Greiner studied history, political science and English / American studies in Marburg / Lahn and Frankfurt am Main from 1971 to 1978. Greiner spent an academic year in the USA in 1973/74. He received his doctorate in political science at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1984 with a thesis on the National Security Council under Harry S. Truman and Dwight D. Eisenhower (published in an abridged version: Politics on the edge of the abyss? The foreign and military policy of the USA im Cold War , Heilbronn 1986). In 1980 Greiner was appointed to the advisory board of the Institute for Marxist Studies and Research , and from 1987 he was a member of the Center for Marxist Peace Research (ZMF).

In the 1980s he worked as a lecturer at the Universities of Münster and Oldenburg and as a research assistant in the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Oldenburg. From 1978 to 1989 he worked on the editorial team of the journal English-American Studies . From 1986 to 1989 Greiner was a research assistant at the Hamburg Foundation for Social History of the 20th Century . From December 1989 to January 2018 he was employed at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research , where from 1994 to 2013 he headed the work area “Theory and History of Violence”. He completed his habilitation in 1997 at the history seminar of the University of Hamburg with a study on the Morgenthau legend and has been teaching there as an adjunct professor since 2004. His study War Without Fronts. The USA in Vietnam has been translated into several languages ​​and has received numerous awards. In 2009 he received the “Willi Paul Adams Award” from the Organization of American Historians for the best foreign-language book on the history of the United States . From March 2015 to January 2018, Greiner headed the Berlin Center for Cold War Studies . This college is a joint project of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research, the Institute for Contemporary History Munich - Berlin , the Federal Foundation for Coming to terms with the SED dictatorship and the Humboldt University in Berlin .

His work focuses on the US history of the 20th century - with special reference to the Cold War - the relations between the military and civil society since 1900, the German-American relationship , the German images of America as well as the theory of violence and international relations in the 20th century Century.
