Foundation for Social History of the 20th Century
The Foundation for Social History of the 20th Century was founded in Hamburg in 1984 as a documentation center for Nazi social policy by u. a. Angelika Ebbinghaus and the doctor Karl Heinz Roth .
Previously, in 1983, groups that wanted to research the medical history of National Socialism and National Socialist social policy had founded a nationwide project, an "Association for Research into National Socialist Health and Social Policy" with its headquarters in Hamburg. This published the magazine articles on National Socialist health and social policy . The editors soon separated and this magazine was continued - but now in Berlin - by a group of the association around Götz Aly. The magazine still exists today under the new editorship as BGNS in Wallstein Verlag.
The remaining Hamburg group founded the aforementioned documentation center in 1985. With financial help from the Hamburg Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Culture , a scientific research institute was set up and numerous research projects carried out. The first location was Rentzelstrasse in Hamburg. In the summer of 1986 the documentation center moved to Mittelweg 36 in the building of the Hamburg Institute for Social Research. At that time it was reorganized into the Hamburg Foundation for the Social History of the 20th Century . The first chairman of the foundation was Karl Heinz Roth from 1986 until today. For 6 years, the foundation was largely funded by the Hamburg Foundation for the Promotion of Science and Culture and in 1991 moved into its own premises in the Mont-Blanc House on Schanzenstrasse in Hamburg. The foundation moved to Bremen in the mid to late 1990s .
The 2017 board members are Angelika Ebbinghaus , Karl Heinz Roth and Marcel van der Linden .
From 1986 to 2002 the foundation published the magazine 1999 - magazine for social history of the 20th and 21st centuries . From 2003 to the end of 2007 the print edition appeared under the new name Sozial.Geschichte. Journal of historical analysis of the 20th and 21st centuries . The digital edition began in 2009 under the title Sozial.Geschichte Online . In 2017, issue 20 of Sozial.Geschichte Online was published.
