Martin Louis Schmidt (born August 21, 1966 in Berlin-Dahlem ) is a German journalist , publicist and politician ( AfD ). In the 1990s he was deputy editor-in-chief and department head of the new right-wing newspaper Junge Freiheit , for which he continues to write today. In 2016 he became a member of the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate for the AfD .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1986, Schmidt did military service in the Bundeswehr in 1986/87 . He then studied history and German at the universities in Erlangen and Freiburg im Breisgau. During his studies he became a member of the Freiburg University Guild Balmung, which Dieter Stein also joined. Among other things, he was for the magazine Of course! of the Freedom Federation. In 1990 he became the spokesman for his university guild and a member of the advisory board of the Corporations Association of German Guilds (DG).

In February 1990 he wrote his first article, in May 1991 he joined the editorial team of the newspaper Junge Freiheit (JF). There he worked in the department of “ Ethnopluralism ” (from 1992 “Nationality Issues ”). Above all, he deals with Eastern Europe and the Russian Germans . He then became deputy editor-in-chief and head of the “Nationality Issues” and “Travel” departments. Due to austerity measures, he left the newspaper in 1998. He also published in the national revolutionary magazine we ourselves and in the right-wing extremist magazine Die Aula . He was also a “freelancer” (Eastern Central Europe) for the revanchist Ostpreußenblatt . In 1994 he gave a lecture at the Junge Landsmannschaft East Prussia .

Schmidt works as a freelance journalist (focus on "ethnic group and minority policy"), he still writes for the JF today. According to a study (as of 2000), he also holds 2.0 percent of the shares in Junge Freiheit Verlags GmbH & Co. He is also chairman of the Rhineland-Palatinate regional association of the Association for German Cultural Relations Abroad (VDA), and deputy on the foundation's board of trustees German Culture in Eastern Europe - OKR, formerly the East German Cultural Council Foundation and deputy spokesman for the association “Expellees, Resettlers and German Minorities in the AfD”.

He has lived in Annweiler am Trifels since 2004 , is married and has two children.

He is a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD), in whose state program commission Rhineland-Palatinate and state committees for foreign and security policy and culture and education he u. a. sits. He is also the spokesman for the working group peoples, cultures, regionalisms. He is the first assessor on the board of the AfD district association Südliche Weinstrasse - Landau id Pfalz.

Already in the municipal elections in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2014 , he ran for position 6 on the list - unsuccessfully at the time - for the district council Südliche Weinstrasse; the AfD received 5.2 percent of the vote and took two seats. In the state election in Rhineland-Palatinate in 2016 , he entered the state parliament of Rhineland-Palatinate via the state list (11th place) of his party . As a direct candidate in the Südliche Weinstrasse constituency (constituency 49), he combined 12.8 percent of the first votes behind the competitors from the SPD and CDU .

He is a full member of the Committee on Science, Education and Culture and an alternate member of the Committee on European Affairs and One World.
