Hannsjoachim W. Koch

Hannsjoachim Wolfgang Koch (* 1933 in Munich ; † unknown) was a British historian of German origin.

life and work

Koch earned a BA in History and American Studies from Keele University near Newcastle-under-Lyme in 1965 . He then was a lecturer in history at the University of York . Koch taught at both British and German universities, and from 1970 he was a guest lecturer at the Munich School of Politics . In the 1980s, the cook, who worked at the York Department of History, earned a DPhil . He was a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society until his death .

The linguistically bumpy study Der Sozialdarwinismus (1973) is not very helpful for “further exploration” of the subject, as the historian Winfried Baumgart noted. The science historian Brigitte Hoppe summed up: “Despite the evaluation of specialist literature in general statements, it was an unsuccessful attempt that got stuck”.

According to the historian Wolfgang Wippermann , Koch is a "revisionist historian". In his work on the People's Court , published in 1988, he tried to “celebrate Freisler as an honest and conscientious official”. Hans-Ulrich Wehler , historian, describes Koch in connection with the book presented as a “right-wing radical author”.

According to Wippermann, the work on the history of the Hitler Youth (1975) should be classified as " apologetic ". For Michael H. Kater , Koch has "popular literary [] intentions" and wants to address the "interested layman". Kater criticized Koch's citation and source analysis. There are also "factual errors". Ultimately, the work lacks relevant research approaches. Historian Markus Köster also classifies the script as popular science . "Information and evaluations" provided about the early Hitler Youth are "not very convincing", as the Judaist Heinz Schreckenberg stated. Wehler sees the script as written "from the right-wing extremist corner".

The historian Heinz Hürten sees the work The German Civil War (1978) as not a great gain in knowledge. In addition, there are "factual [] errors" and formal "negligence". According to the historian Boris Barth , Koch “presents the history of the event correctly”, but tends to “make strong apologies”. Wehler rates the work as "blatantly apologetic".

Koch was married and the father of two children.
