Paul Rolo

Paul Jacques Victor Rolo ( November 6, 1917 - October 28, 1992 ) was a historian.

Rolo was born in a prominent Sephardic banking family in Alexandria. His father, Max Rolo (1888–1959), had withdrawn from the family's own cotton trade at an early stage. His mother, Ivonne Edith Harari (1895–1980), was the daughter of Sir Victor Pasha Harari and sister of Ralph Harari. Paul Rolo was educated at Marlborough College and Balliol College , Oxford. Meanwhile, his cousin Molly Rolo married Samuel Segal, Baron Segal, in 1934 .

During the war he served with the Secret Intelligence Service in Cairo and then became a tutor at Balliol. 1951-1982 he taught at Keele University , where he was appointed professor of history in 1972.

He had three children with his wife, Rosemary, sister of Hugh Carless .
