Eberhard Straub (born December 30, 1940 in Berlin ) is a German historian and publicist.

Life

The son of the ancient historian Johannes Straub studied history , art history and archeology at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , the University of Turin and the University of Vienna from 1962 . In 1968 he was in Munich summa cum laude for Dr. phil. PhD. In 1977 he completed his habilitation there. He then worked as an editor for the features section of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . 1986–1989 he was with the Stuttgarter Zeitung , and finally with Die Welt for six months . He then became head of public relations at the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft in Essen (until 1997). Between 1970 and 1974 he went on research trips to Spain , New York City and Vienna . Since 1998 he has lived as a freelance author in Berlin.

Act

Straub's main research interests are cultural history , historical biography and national history ( Spain , Prussia ). He also writes on the history of literature , art history and the history of music . As a historian, he is particularly interested in illuminating the basic mental and universal historical tendencies of an era as well as in the intellectual and social-psychological classification of historical personalities beyond structural- historical and sociological schemes. Their essayistic style, rich in anecdotes, and the lack of a scientific apparatus make his books attractive to a non-academic readership, while on the other hand the wealth of allusions and hidden quotations as well as the latent recourse to basic historical facts usually require at least a rudimentary knowledge of the topic .

As a journalist, Straub writes for the Berliner Zeitung , FAZ, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Compact (magazine), among others . He also accepts journalistic assignments from the business world . For a long time he belonged to the regular authors of the Siedler Verlag . In 1994 he was one of the authors of the anthology The Self-Confident Nation for the New Right .
